When it comes to the maintenance of hard surfaces, some homeowners fail to see the bigger picture. In their desperation to fix a problem that's right in front of their eyes, they fail to take preventive measures that would help them avoid these issues long-term. That was the case for our most recent customer, a hard-working woman in Stamford, CT. She had been struggling with the grout lines in her master shower for about a year. No matter how hard she cleaned them, they would quickly return to poor condition.

Shower Before and After a Grout Sealing in Stamford, CT
Not knowing that she could avoid the endless cleaning cycle by having our Stamford Grout Sealing professionals seal the grout, the homeowner continued cleaning the shower's surfaces using bleach-based products. Unsurprisingly, restoring the color of the grout lines became more difficult as time passed. The cleaner she used eventually became ineffective, allowing mold and stains to take over the grout and the expansion joints.

Concerned, she went online and searched for a reputable company that could help her solve the problem. Luckily she found Sir Grout of Greater Fairfield County in the top search results. After browsing our website for a few minutes and seeing the positive feedback we have received from previous customers, she called to request a free assessment and a quote.

We visited the client's home on the scheduled day to assess the shower. As soon as we walked in, we saw exactly what the client had described over the phone: dingy, moldy grout lines. What we didn't know was that the shower had a small ceramic tile décor, which is why the combination of dirt and mold that covered the grout lines stood out the way it did.

It was clear that the grout lines hadn't been sealed in a long time, but we also suspected poor maintenance had accelerated the deterioration of the shower's surfaces. We later confirmed our suspicions when we asked the client about her cleaning routine. She used abrasive cleaning solutions because they provided immediate results. While they might seem effective at first, these cleaners tend to cause irreversible damage over time. The mold was a symptom of a bigger problem, one that had been worsened by the continuous use of bleach-based products.

When we took a closer look at the grout on the shower floor and the expansion joints, we noticed they were cracked and broken beyond repair. Without a doubt, the state of the grout and the joints was the result of prolonged exposure to water and other external agents. Had the issue been left unattended, it would have resulted in severe water damage.

Fortunately, we had arrived just in time to help the client avoid costly repairs. We offered the customer a thorough restoration procedure that consisted of three steps. We would first clean the shower's tiles and grout lines using our high-quality tools and proprietary products. Next, we would scrape out and re-grout the grout lines on the shower floor and the expansion joints. To finish, we would seal the shower's grout using our proprietary sealant ColorSeal. The customer accepted our proposal and scheduled an appointment for the job.

We returned to the client's home a few days later to restore the shower. We began by soaking the shower's surfaces with Sir Grout's Natural Hard Surface Cleaner. Not only is this cleaner safe for tile and grout, it also contains properties that help remove mold and mildew. After we let it sit for a few minutes, we rinsed the cleaner off using a high-speed scrubber. When we finished extracting the dirt and removing the mold, we further sanitized the shower floor and the expansion joints with a steam cleaner.

Once we finished cleaning, we scraped out the damaged grout from the shower floor and the expansion joints. Next, we re-grouted the joints and the floor using our proprietary grout mix. To finish the procedure, we sealed the shower's grout lines with ColorSeal. This is an acrylic-based sealant that shuts off the grout's pores, facilitating maintenance and protecting it against water, stains, soap, dirt, mold, and mildew. It also comes in a variety of colors. The client chose white to give the shower a much cleaner appearance.

The client loved the results. The once run-down shower now looked pristine, and the shower would now be easier to maintain. She thanked us for a job well done and said she would recommend our services to anyone in need of hard surface restoration.

Before leaving, we gave the customer a few tips to help maintain her shower. We first recommended cleaning the shower once a week using a pH-neutral cleaner like our proprietary cleaner. Unlike most store-bought products that contain bleach or acidic substances, our cleaning solution preserves and enhances the overall appearance of any hard surface. We also suggested keeping the shower enclosure properly ventilated. This practice helps prevent water seepage and mold growth.
