One of the most popular flooring options is travertine. This type of material is not only extremely durable, but it also requires less upkeep than most natural stones. Like many other hard surfaces, it may lose its appeal with time if not properly maintained. That was the case for a homeowner from Hilton Head Island, SC. He had lately acquired a lovely house, and the magnificent travertine floor was one of his favorite features from it. He decided he wanted to keep his floor as neat as possible.

Before and After Our Stone Honing and Polishing on Travertine Floor in Hilton Head Island, SC
The house was constructed years ago, and the floor had never been properly maintained. The floor gradually became dull and etched as a result of high foot activity and abrasive cleaners. The homeowner and his family valued the home, so they naturally wanted to renovate every inch of it. They recognized they needed professional help to restore the travertine floor, even if they could fix most of the house's problems on their own. The homeowner looked for stone polishing experts in Hilton Head Island on the internet and he noticed Sir Grout of the Lowcountry in the top search results. He then called us to schedule a free evaluation.

We arrived at the customer's residence on the scheduled date and evaluated the surface. We noticed that the travertine colors were muted, and the tiles had multiple watermarks, in addition to the noticeably dingy grout lines and scratches on the tiles. Those marks indicated that the stone's porous surface had been totally exposed. Travertine is porous, and while certain variations have a lower absorption rate than others, the stone must be sealed to avoid water infiltration and discoloration. We offered a full stone restoration procedure in these cases. Using our proprietary products, we would clean, hone, polish, and seal the natural stone surface. Our offer was accepted, and we scheduled an appointment for the following day.

The next day, we returned to the client's home to complete the service. We started by cleaning the entire surface with a high-speed scrubber and a soap-free cleaner. Natural stone may be cleaned safely with our proprietary cleaner. We utilized a steam cleaner to ensure the surface was thoroughly clean before beginning the honing technique, as we needed to be sure there was no sign of soil left.

We honed the floor after we finished cleaning. We did this by scrubbing the entire surface with low and mid-grit diamond pads until the etch marks and water stains were gone. The floor was then polished to a great shiny finish. We needed to seal the natural stone now that it had been renewed in order to keep its look. Stone Armor, our trademark sealant, was applied to the travertine floor. The stone's pores are sealed with this impregnating sealant, which protects it from water, etch marks, and stains.

We showed the client and his family their brand-new travertine floor when we were finished. They were elated with the outcome. It was the homeowner's first time seeing the floor in that condition. He expressed gratitude for the service and mentioned that he would contact us again for maintenance.

Before we left, we made a few recommendations to the homeowner and his family. We initially recommended cleaning the floor on a regular basis with a pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaning solution like Sir Grout's Natural Hard Surface Cleaner. We also encouraged them to check the sealant on a regular basis to verify it was still working. They should do this by sprinkling a few droplets of water on the floor. The floor must be re-sealed if the water has been absorbed.
